What's the story?

Dickens wrote the book when his personal life was weakening. He and his wife were separated and he had a mistress who was younger. It was in the 1800s and took place at that same time and I think it reflected his new life ahead of him. he was, at this point, a clean slate. He had no wife, he was starting over although he wasn't pure because of his past, his present was just clean. He had this idea of what he wanted which is reflected in Pip's image of what he wanted for a father figure and who h saw himself as. He believed the love he got was what he deserved which is reflected in the coldness of his and Estella's relationship. Dickens I think wrote the novel to represent him and his new journey ahead and all the possibilities he could take. He uses imagery to illustrate the literal characteristics of the people Pip encounters, as well as their names being a symbol for who the people are. "A fearful man, all in coarse grey, with a great iron on his leg." The name Magwich just sounds evil and dirty and that represented the character and the threat the character played towards the innocent Pip. There was also an allusion to Hamlet which portrays the brain of Dickens and his education in literature which establishes a community and expectation of both the author and reader to achieve.( represents both the caliber of the author and reader). "..as it know appears to me, something like a religious cross of the ghost in Hamlet with Richard the Third..."

Interesting class day 2

We talked about the same things in class today about great expectations:
When dickens talks about good and evil he is hinting how everyone is evil. Everyone influenced Pip and ultimately he became evil to himself. He never realized who he was or who he was to be because he was focusing on how others influence him and if he matched others.everyone was evil and was the demise of Pip even when they were good to themselves. They were all selfish even the ones who were not because they took something away from Pip and Pip could never get his childhood back. He became like all those around him; miserable, alone, kind, secluded. Yesterday lecture helped but it was hard because now we know what is going on and can't decipher and interpret for ourselves what is going on based on context clues. But if will help because now if we are confused we know what is suppose to happen and can use that to help get along the book when difficult times arise when reading. With the lit terms I use flash cards to help me learn te defituons and use examples/find examples when I don't understand a word so I made online flash cards so they can be accessible to everyone.

Lit terms #2 Remix

All That David Copperfield Kind of Crap

It seems that Dickens style is very descriptive and detailed with who each characters are and their meaning to the story line. It outlines one person's life with excessive details that a reader feels they are reading about little things and not the whole idea. David Copperfield seemed to be a general story where one person experiences multiple tragedies and gets sent away just to have more tragedies to occur. At the end there is a small plot twist but it is just outlining a man's life who has lived through great tragedy. When Salinger states that her protagonist in no where near David Copperfield she is trying to say that Holden is someone who is abnormal and an outcast who doesn't tell his life in details but in moments. He outlines his life from how it happened but not in minuscule details that no one will remember but unforgettable adventures that relate to the readers. He tells his story from his own perspective and what he thinks, which is only one perspective but it allows the reader to better involve themselves in the decisions made. Dickens likes to incorporate a mound of characters that the protagonist encounters whereas Salinger has many characters but focuses on the main ones that truly affect the protagonist and his/her character. Copperfield is intricate with general background information about his family and where he comes from but Holden stray away from that and states that he not the average narrator because he tells his real story, not the general one that people can read on paper or the story of how others shaped him and their story.

Answers:
1. I read Siddhartha sophomore year but I do not remember it and so I do not have the sufficient background knowledge to answer this qusyions. But from the passage we read in class I can say that, that was the moment when Siddhartha realized what he was and what he wanted/had to do. He is someone that doesn't follow tradition and is trying to find a higher meaning other than just being told what to do or following someone else's life. He needs to go on a journey from the one he just went on to discover how he is going to be his own person.
2. A
3. A
4. D
5. B

Skills
I need to know vocab and how to use it within the context of questions and answers and passages. I need to be able to relate the novels and pick specific times out of a book and analyze it. Some are straight forward but others you have to read in between the lines and make assumptions based on common sense and what is in the passage. You can't just look at the question and know it without having background information and so you need to be educated without blindly guessing.

Hacking My Education

This semester I want to become more involved in the readings we do in class. I want to be able to relate what we talk about to the bigger picture and how to relate it to other pieces we have done to find a universal theme. I can hack my learning by getting focused and reaching out to other sources for answers to get different perspectives. I can create learning communities and study groups so I can get feedback on essays, suggestions, and get better engaged in what we are earning about. I can research at home before coming to class to be better prepared for discussions and have more meaningful inputs. I can think about my future plans and how I can use the skills I am being taught right now for that reason.

Literature analysis #1 : The Time Keeper

1. The inventor of the worlds first clock is punished for trying to put meaning to something given to us as a gift. He is banished to a cave and punished by having to listen to all those who worry about time and want more of it. Right when he is almost broken, he is released and granted his freedom as Father Time. There is a catch, he has a mission along with and hourglass and the chance to redeem himself by teaching two people of earth the meaning of time. He returns to earth and meets a teenage girl who is about to commit suicide and give up on life and a wealthy middle aged businessman who wants t live forever. To stay free he has to save these two and literally stops t the world to do so.
2. The theme of the novel is a quote from the book, "We do not realize the sound the world makes unless of course it comes to a stop. Then when it starts it sounds like an orchestra." This exemplifies the theme of the story to look beyond the lights and the world around you. To be a detective and look at life with a grain of salt and magnifying glass to uncover the sorrow you have and the happiness you have at the same time. We go through life just getting by and getting thing done and we become so accustomed and numb to the actions we take and the actions around we we don't think highly of what actually happend. No one stope everyday and thinks about their life because they are too busy to do so, this book tells readers and shows them that once in a while it is necessary to literally put everything down sit outside and stop.
3. the authors tone is passionate and sympathetic and hopeful. The Time Keeper has faith that he can change the world because he not only needs to save himself but he sees the struggle that others have because of his creation and he wants to help them. He sees the problem and even though he was put to the task of helping these people, he has a real genuine care to make a change and have everyone see the difference they can make and what they really mean.
"You have not died... you are in the middle of a moment"
"Magic came from the gods. And when the gods touched something, the normal became the supernatural and the simple became the wondrous."
"It does not satisfy. it only make him hungry to do more. Man wants to own his existence, But no one owns time. When you are measuring life you are not living. I know."
4. symbolism pg 179
"On the wall of his cave he drew the shape of a rolling pin." The rolling pin represented the beginning of life for him in his time. e would see the midwives soothing the babies with rolling pins on the mothers womb before the children were born to give them a sense of comfort. This image gave Dor comfort just as the babies and in a bigger symbolism Dor represents the beginning of a new life.
Foils
"One teenage girl who is about to give up on life and the other a wealthy business man who wants to love forever." This represents the challenge that Dor has to face. He has to make these two opposites realize the same thing, that time is something that should not be taken for granted.
Third person omniscient POV-
this gives the readers a sense of knowing everything that is going on, feelings and actions of the characters but not specifically narrowed to one POV of the narrator so the reader gets the full unbiased story.
"Dor remembered Victor's voice...Dor knew it was him the moment Victor spoke in the shop." pg 132
Simile pg 132
"Voices are to one destined to listen for eternity as distinct as a fingerprint." It helps the readers understand what voices are and how they add to the story and help with understanding by making something more relatable. Now we know each voice is unique in its own and tis is how Dor knew it was Victor because of his unique voice.
repetition pg 30 also pg 62
Nim was the reason they were living in exile. The reason he could not hold his children each morning." This emphasizes that it was Nim who was the culprit and and Dor was just a causality with the actions of Nim and it makes it seem like Dor is the victim and had nothing to do with how his got into his situation.
flashback pg 185-186
"...Now Dor looked at Sarah remembering that moment" This serves to make a connection between Dor and his life before he got punished and Sarah's life and how they intertwine. It helps Dor ask questions to decipher an answer and make him question his journey along with Sarah's
direct characterization pg 116
"Roger, tall and pale, with cheeks that sagged like a hound dog's was almost always by Victor's side." Roger is faithful and looks tired as if run ragged and worn out but he is always loyal to Victor no matter what victor puts him through
indirect characterization pg
"If you don;t come in on Saturday don't bother coming in on sunday." Victor said this and it states that he only cares about work and not actual people. He thinks success is how hard you work rather than the lives you touch.
rhetorical question pg 117
"Still, how would it look if he didn't leave more than enough for her every need?" This shows that Victor cares for someone else but only to make other people happy and show that he is a good person. he cares about his image more than his actual relationship and its ironic that this actually helps his relationship even though act for wrong reasons.
personification pg 81
"But a desperate heart will seduce the mind." Even though its wrong you can be swayed by your emotion state and how much you care for someone else which ties into how Sarah felt about Ethan and how she knew he was bad to her but she liked him and forgave his mistakes.

Characterization
1. "If you don;t come in on Saturday don't bother coming in on sunday." Victor said this and it states that he only cares about work and not actual people. He thinks success is how hard you work rather than the lives you touch.
"Roger, tall and pale, with cheeks that sagged like a hound dog's was almost always by Victor's side." Roger is faithful and looks tired as if run ragged and worn out but he is always loyal to Victor no matter what victor puts him through
"...to forever remind Dor of the moment Alli lat dying on the blanket." Dor has gone through heartache and knows what it is like to feel pain. This makes him a more compassionate and relatable character because he knows the horrible thing in life just as those he is trying to help.
"Sarah Lemon was really good at science." We know she is smart and probably knows right from wrong. She enjoys school and is not the typical popular girl.
2. No the diction and syntax is constant throughout the book because it is just a story being told. The only reason the tone changes is because of the characters and how they react to situations. It is told from third person omniscient and so there are generalities in the text intertwined with explaining the characters.
3. He is static but round because he has constant values and morals and those don't change even when he is punished. He is smart and believes in the gods and time and how he messed up and needs to fix his mistakes. He is round because he evolves from someone who lived in a cave and could only think about his mistakes to being allowed to help others and have a chance to redeem himself.
4. I came away feeling enlighten with the material of the book rathe than the characters. I was intrigued with the message and the whole concept of the book and plot itself and it make me think differently about my surroundings and how I use my time and what it actually means. I didn't feel like I met someone but I felt a little different mentally after reading it so I was personally transformed or enlightened like the characters in the book.

Masterpiece conversation: Sierra

Sierra wants to do a fashion show or styling which is giving something that she has to her community and getting involved and making connections. This is similar to mine of giving something that she can offer to others around her to create a community of like interested people and we both can learn from these experiences for our future plans. I can help her if she ever needs someone to recruit for her.

Masterpiece conversation: Stevie

Stevie's masterpiece involves spreading peace and live and gevin back. This involves my masterpiece and wht I want to do because we both want to go into the medical field to help others. She wants to give a little but of herself and what she has experienced and give it to the people she encounters. This is what I want to do with my clinic, incorporate stories and learning about each other in a fun environment. I agreed to help her in anyway I could if I ever got any info that would help her in her journey.

Masterpiece conversation: Courtney

Courtney's masterpiece incorporates accepting into society. This relates to mine through the idea of helping people and getting involved in the community. Accepting people for who they are and integrating them into something other than their daily lives. I would love to be a part of her project which incorporates fun activities for a great cause.

Planning Masterpiece

1. My topic has to do with how other people make you feel. When people talk to others, tendencies are that they usually look at what stands out. If someone has a mole, or a zit, or some asymmetrical feature you can see the eyes wonder to that. I want to give to those people something that is hard to come by; someone who actually looks at you when you are talking or asks you questions about you and not what they see. We are also very secluded in where we are and I want to branch out and kinda let life smack you in the face a little. There is more than Santa Maria and too many times we only believe in where we are. I also want to learn about why we feel like when we see something that stands out, why do we have to stare at it. Do we feel a need to understand what we see or feel a need to fix it? I want to learn about how we let others opinions shape us and the saying "you become your best friend" because you hang around them so much you start to develop their personality how that happens.
2. When people talk to me and see my blemishes I forget whatI am talking because I know the other person isn't fully hearing me. I appreciate the people who I can tell don't see them but see the words I am saying when they talk to me. And I know I have done it and I look back and that person is looking in a mirror trying to figure out what I was looking at and it shouldn't be that way.
3. I hope it enriches the people I encounter. I already know what it feels like and how to fix it, I want to spread that to others. I want others to not worry about what they look like rather that they are comfortable in their own skin. I also want the people who go to experience something more than "Hollywood" or California and learn something about another that will help them with themselves.
4. human interaction, psychology, brain functions
5. I will start my plan by looking at videos, getting ideas of how to contact the individuals to develop a "clinic", read books or again watch videos on how to interact with ill patients, just how to be kind for others for their benefit and no yours.
6. I need my friends and family and anyone who wants to experience this. I need to contact an administrator of a hospital or talk to doctors that I know to ask them how I can start to develop a project like this. I need a hospital or a facility that has people to take care of so we can see the heartache others go through. I need arts and crafts and fun ideas for people of all ages to create memories or mementos for loved ones. I need a camera because hopefully I will see some smiles and I want to capture that. I need a way of transportation. I want to meet the people with a journey to tell and I want to sit and listen.
7. I could use Youtube and make a video of pictures and my experience and have a link at the end to another video tat someone else made who went on the trip and they will have another link at the end of their video an it will be a string of events. I will also have all my friends and family watch it so it gets views and other people will see that and start watching it and it will become a hit and have others see what someone can do and maybe just maybe get on the Ellen show because the string of videos will be that cool.
