What's the story?
Dickens wrote the book when his personal life was weakening. He and his wife were separated and he had a mistress who was younger. It was in the 1800s and took place at that same time and I think it reflected his new life ahead of him. he was, at this point, a clean slate. He had no wife, he was starting over although he wasn't pure because of his past, his present was just clean. He had this idea of what he wanted which is reflected in Pip's image of what he wanted for a father figure and who h saw himself as. He believed the love he got was what he deserved which is reflected in the coldness of his and Estella's relationship. Dickens I think wrote the novel to represent him and his new journey ahead and all the possibilities he could take. He uses imagery to illustrate the literal characteristics of the people Pip encounters, as well as their names being a symbol for who the people are. "A fearful man, all in coarse grey, with a great iron on his leg." The name Magwich just sounds evil and dirty and that represented the character and the threat the character played towards the innocent Pip. There was also an allusion to Hamlet which portrays the brain of Dickens and his education in literature which establishes a community and expectation of both the author and reader to achieve.( represents both the caliber of the author and reader). "..as it know appears to me, something like a religious cross of the ghost in Hamlet with Richard the Third..."
