Love of Learning

The love of learning is not something that can be defined. it can be interpreted in many different ways by the many different people that do so. The love of learning for Isaac Asimov is that of inspiring the future and making education something to be cherished rather than dreaded.

Not everything is fancied by an individual and thus it makes it hard to be told what to do and enjoy it. To enjoy something you have to be willing and personally interested in the endeavor to really get meaning and learning out of it. This learning is easy and natural because as individuals, we want to learn something new or try something new so we can feel something new. As a society we look down upon learning as something that is punish or forced upon us. This idea is harmful to our future and the ability to learn. As children we think of education as something that is to "get done" like a chore and so we can be done with it; in reality education is intangible and so we cannot put an end to it. Education is something we should love to inspire what we can do.

When we get inspired there is a staircase effect where one interest can lead to another and another and another and eventually those interests lead to a singular idea that we grow fond of. The love of soccer can turn into the love of angles, which can turn into the love of math and therefore a future as an engineer or math teacher. This concept of staircase learning can help individuals find a future for society and themselves. An example of this is the rise of media and machines. We want to be able to learn and find new ways of doing things to brighten our minds and thus was born the idea of Google and Apple and the internet. We want to share our ideas and find new ones so we can have influence on others and others on ourselves.

The times are changing and we need to change with them. We can't live in the past and the present is only the worry and anticipation of the future. What we do now, what we learn now, what we see now all affect the future we have and by developing good educational habits now we can secure the fututre. The love of learning inspires the future because learning helps us find who we are and what we want to do in the world.
